CORVAIR TURBOS

by Timothy Palmer

Very little has been written about the differences in the Corvair turbochargers. They were made from model years 1962 to 1966. The early model (1962-1964) versions all have the same capacity but there are minor differences and I will try to describe and will be summarized in a table below. To begin with all the turbochargers have a part no painted on an I.D. tag attached to the compressor housing. The numbers are given below (thanks to Larry Claypool). All the …

FC Oil Filler Plug

By Gary Baxter and Tim Palmer, Green Country Corvair Group, March 1995 Rear View

I recently had to fix an oil leak coming from a rubber expansion plug in the hole where the oil filler used to be on the oil filter / alternator adapter. Like many early Corvair owners I have replaced the generator with a later alternator with built-in regulator. Since I have the original F.C. oil filler which comes out of the block, there was no need for the filler in the car location. Therefo…

Loose Screws

By Tim Palmer, Green Country Corvair Group, November 1989 Rear View

Has your Corvair cut-out and generally acted strange and you couldn't figure out why? There are lots of possibilities, here are few that aren't in shop manual. Tighten the carburetor top screws. With age these have a tendency to loosen. I check every time I do a tune-up. While you have your screw driver out also tighten the fuel pump screws. If these become loose the fuel pump may suck air and starve the engine a…

REAR SKID PLATE TRIVIA

by Tim Palmer

I'm sure you have often pondered one of life's better bigger questions... Are all engine skid plates the same?

The answer is no. From what I can determine there were at least two. 60-63 used 6257796. 64-69 used 3839263. 3839263 was also used as general replacement after 64 probably, at least my 69 parts book lists it as such. So what is difference? The difference is in the arc cutout for the crankshaft pulley or harmonic balancer. With a harmonic balancer…

ROCKER COVER BOLTS

by Tim Palmer

Having recently purchased a used set of heads recently, I found a common problem with the Corvair's aluminum head. Four out of six holes for the rocker cover bolts were stripped out or appeared to be. Boo Hiss. I hate using Heli-coils. Fortunately I remembered an old trick of running a tap down the full length of the hole. Usually the hole wasn't tapped the full length. Assuming I found enough threads to grip, I then replace the stock bolts with the longest on…

Tim and I were talking about all the trials I had in finding a multi purpose oil pressure switch. The following is EVERYTHING I know about this subject. Here goes.
